Starlink's Competitor OneWeb Is Developing Fast
OneWeb Sends New Satellites to Space
OneWeb, headquartered in the United Kingdom, aims to provide high-band internet service to the whole of the United Kingdom after the fifth launches it will make in June, with internet from space which we heard of, with the Starlink project of SpaceX. The company recently sent 36 satellites to the orbit.
OneWeb was a private company founded in 2012, but after announcing its bankruptcy, it became more popular with the acquisition of a large part of the company by the British Government in November 2020. Within the scope of internet service from space, which is the big project of the company, there are a total of 146 satellites in orbit. OneWeb company plans to have a total of 648 satellites at an altitude of 1200 kilometers to provide a worldwide service. By 2022, it aims to serve the rest of Europe and parts of Africa. On the other hand, SpaceX, its biggest competitor, currently has 1300 satellites in orbit at an altitude of 550 kilometers within the scope of the Starlink project. SpaceX plans to send 42,000 satellites to orbit by the middle of 2027 as part of the Starlink project.
OneWeb states that although it seems to be behind Starlink within the scope of this project, they are deliberately doing it slowly and that it will be irresponsible to send so many satellites quickly so that future generations can benefit from space.
Unlike Starlink, the OneWeb project states that it will provide the internet service not directly to the users but to the telecommunication companies, and that the users will reach the internet through these companies and will leave the pricing to these companies.
